Background/BIO

Dr. Art Fields and David Jenkins have over 50 years of combined educational experience as teachers, school building administrators and central office/district level administrators. They worked closely together for over a decade at DC Public Schools (DCPS) in Washington D.C. in various roles supporting special education, behavior, attendance, health & wellness, school culture, and school turnaround. Dr. Art most recently was the Special Advisor to the Chancellor and Chief Integrity Officer, with David serving as the Manager of Policy & Compliance, and Director of Student Behavior, School Culture/Climate. They collaborated on multiple projects ensuring accountability for all stakeholders. Early on they realized someday they would eventually collaborate to bring their executive level experiences to multiple school districts across the United States. Dr. Art served his country faithfully in the United States Air Force, holds several degrees including a MSW and Ph.D. with David holding a M.Ed.

Innovative K12 Solutions Overview

Innovative K12 Solutions (IKS) is an education company focused on ensuring all students, regardless of zip code have access to welcoming and safe learning environments by bringing professional development and game changing Education Technology (Ed. Tech) to communities not normally exposed to those opportunities. We also provide school districts with support around Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Restorative Practices (RP) and the re-acclimation to in-person learning. IKS is dedicated to supporting school leaders with enhanced learning opportunities and connecting innovative partner companies with key decision makers in school districts around the United States, and then shepherding those relationships all the way through to the point of successful collaboration and implementation.

IKS was founded in January of 2022, by Dr. Art Fields and David Jenkins, both former members of the DC Public Schools (DCPS) Central Administrative Executive Leadership Team. Dr. Art dedicated over 20 years to DCPS in multiple roles including Director of Special Education Compliance, Deputy Chief of Youth Engagement, Chief Integrity Officer and Special Advisor to the Chancellor. In over a decade of service to DCPS David had several leadership roles including Manager of Policy & Compliance, Director of Student Behavior/School Culture & Climate, and School Turnaround Specialist. Prior to his time at DCPS, David taught and was an administrator in the Los Angeles area at Inglewood, Compton Centennial and Crenshaw High Schools.

During their careers at DCPS, Dr. Art and David’s paths overlapped on multiple occasions including collaborating to address a major special education lawsuit against DCPS ultimately identifying multiple deficiencies in the IEP/504 protocol including the behavior manifestation determination process, which was leading to a disproportionate suspension rate of students with special needs and of color. Working closely with their Office of General Counsel, Dr. Art and David were able to rewrite language in the regulations governing behavior and special needs, which the City Council approved, leading to an initiative to automate the entire behavior policy protocol. It was during that time that they were first introduced to the power of Ed. Tech as David was assigned as the lead for identifying a software platform that could ensure the automation of all protocols and procedures in the behavior policy including fidelity with due process, timelines, and the manifestation determination process. Eventually, Dr. Art and David were able to successfully collaborate with a software company that built out all the requirements including the ability to populate real time dashboards and reports empowering school and district leaders to make data-driven decisions maximizing their resources. After successfully implementing that platform and all subsequent professional development required, Dr. Art and David recognized that they would someday, eventually work closely together on their own private business venture leading to the formation of IKS.

Business Model Ed Tech:

IKS’s business model is based on building a foundation of trust with clients, school districts and colleges to identify potential partnerships and then shepherd that process from initial acquisition through implementation and beyond.

Technology Companies:

We start by working closely to identify key components of the companies we partner with, beginning with their mission and vision to determine compatibility. From there, we focus on understanding the nuts and bolts of their business technology, which organically leads to the creation of a list of potential school districts that those technologies could benefit.

School Districts:

Having worked so closely with hundreds of deans, principals, superintendents, chiefs, and chancellors, and having maintained those relationships successfully, we can immediately identify potential school district partners for our clients based on their needs. Because so many of the urban and rural school districts are often overlooked by game changing technology companies, IKS is able to bring solutions they might not be aware exist.

Innovative Connecting Solutions:

Once we’ve spent the necessary time to truly understand our client’s mission, vision, goals, and technologies, we are able seamlessly to connect those game changing solutions to applicable school leaders, districts and key decision makers. Rather than those clients having to make countless cold calls and expend precious dollars on marketing packages, IKS bridges the conversations directly with the key decision makers, arranging the first meetings to be presentations and demonstrations leading to immediate next steps.
